This Post Is Working Titled
You know what I hate? Titling things. I am so bad at it. I have over 65,000 words of my current project, which means it is VERY CLOSE to being finished. But what doesn’t it have? A frigging title.
I got very lucky with my last book. One came to me that I loved, that summed up everything I liked about it, and I can actually imagine on the cover of a real book. Yes, hypothetical marketing teams could still change it, and that’s fine (well, not fine, I’d cry, but I’d deal), but it was a good title to query with, and I love when people ask me what it’s called and I tell them and they say “OOOH!”
Now I have friends who think I’m excellent at titling. But, friends, you are wrong. It was a fluke!

I’m so with you on this one. Sometimes these titles come to me and I adore them. And sometimes they are the last thing I write despite agonizing for ages.
Oh, I’m TERRIBLE at titling! The worst I’ve done was my freshman year in college: “The Effect of Repression on Communist Organizing Against Racial Oppression During the Great Depression.”
I think I thought the pile-on of “ession” was cute. I am not, however, sure why.
But, wouldn’t you think that’s exactly how naming works? There isn’t a process to go about it. Don’t they all just come to you?
I could be wrong. I am horrible and unlucky when it comes to titling things. I’d like to meet someone who’s good at it!
